Porsche Macan EV Charging Guide

Macan EV Charging Guide - Porsche Orland Park

The Macan has been a big hit for Porsche, and with the debut of the second generation, Porsche has added an all-electric version to the lineup. The Macan uses the same EV architecture as the Taycan, making it one of the most technologically advanced electric vehicles on the road. That means incredible performance and the fastest charging times available in an EV. In order to better explain what an enormous advantage the Macan Electric has over the competition, we put together the following guide.

EV Charging Levels Explained

Porsche EV Charger

Level 1 Charging

Level 1 is charging at its most basic. Compatible chargers are included with most EVs, and Level 1 essentially translates into plugging your vehicle into a 120-volt AC outlet like you have throughout your house. This is unfortunately not the fastest way to charge, with Level 1 charging only adding about 2 to 5 miles of range per hour. But the upside is that it’s not difficult to find somewhere to plug in. So if you’re staying somewhere without a charger for a while, or you just need a few more miles of range to get you to a faster charger, Level 1 charging is always an option.

Level 2 Charging

Level 2 is the most common variety of charging you’ll use with your EV. That’s because Level 2 chargers are significantly faster than Level 1, but can still be installed in your home using the same kind of 240V setup that a lot of larger appliances like electric stoves or central air conditioners use. A qualified electrician would have no problem installing a Level 2 charger in most residential garages, and freestanding options are available for those situations where the wall of the garage wouldn’t work for whatever reason. But - it is critically important to have the charger installed by a qualified electrician to make sure that it meets safety regulations.

A Level 2 charger will add between 10 and 60 miles of range per hour. For an electric Macan, Level 2 charging from 0 to 100 percent would take about 11 hours. This is above average, thanks to the Macan’s 11 kW maximum AC charging, compared to the industry average of 7.6 kW. It’s common for EV owners with home Level 2 chargers to plug their vehicles in to charge overnight. Indeed, it’s estimated that roughly 80 percent of all EV charging is done with home Level 2 chargers.

Porsche Level 3 Charging

Level 3 Charging

Level 3 charging, which is also often called DC Fast Charging, works a bit differently from other forms of EV charging. While not every Level 3 charger is identical, they do all use DC current and a much higher voltage for very quick charging. This is especially true for Porsche EVs, including the electric Macan, because the 800-volt architecture allows for 270 kW charging, the fastest charging output of an electric vehicle available. That means a suitably high-output Level 3 charger could take the electric Macan from 10 percent charge to 80 percent in just 21 minutes, half the time it takes a less sophisticated EV to reach the same charge from the same charging station. That’s because the Macan is able to “split” its battery pack in two, charging both halves at the same time at the same rate, another benefit of the advanced EV architecture.
