Signs & Symptoms of Poor A/C Performance

If your air conditioning isn’t working at all, it’s quite obvious almost immediately. But sometimes there are subtler signs that something is wrong, and these are just as important to be able to spot. Here are some important symptoms to look out for:

  • A/C only blowing slightly cool air
  • An unpleasant smell is coming from the A/C vents
  • Weak airflow from A/C vents
  • A/C only functions when the vehicle is in motion
  • Water drops or condensation collecting in the footwells of your vehicle

Air Conditioning Freon Recharge

A few decades ago, “Freon” was the term for the refrigerant in your air conditioning system. It has since been replaced by more environmentally-friendly refrigerants, but the process of how it works to cool your cabin is the same. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the cabin, pumps it outside the cabin to a condenser where it disperses the heat to the outside air. The air conditioning system is sealed, and while refrigerant doesn’t go bad, sometimes seals or hoses within the system can leak, and the air conditioning system loses efficiency as the refrigerant leaks out.

Air Conditioning Compressor Repair and Replacement

The air conditioning compressor is essentially a pump that moves the refrigerant around the system. The compressor pulls refrigerant that has absorbed heat from the cabin and pumps it to the outside of the cabin to be cooled. The compressor is the only moving part of the closed portion of the air conditioning system.

Air Conditioning Condenser Repair and Replacement

After the refrigerant leaves the compressor, it goes to the condenser, which is the part that looks like a small radiator, and is usually located next to the radiator for the engine coolant (unless you have an older 911, of course). This is where the refrigerant releases the heat it absorbed from the cabin, and is then routed back into the cabin, where the cycle repeats.

Air Conditioning Evaporator Repair and Replacement

The evaporator is located inside the cabin, and it’s where the cool air you feel comes from. Warm air from the cabin passes through the evaporator, which is another small radiator, which is where the refrigerant absorbs the heat, thereby cooling the cabin air.
