The Rise of the Luxury Crossover

April 18th, 2018 by

There was once a time when all that drivers expected from a larger car, be it a crossover or a SUV, was pure power, decent handling, and great off-roading capability.

Fuel economy was a sacrifice that buyers were willing to make and quality interiors were seen mostly as a nice bonus, rather than an essential part of the purchase.

However, ever since the turn of the millennium, the technology powering these cars has improved. Manufacturers found ways to a make these vehicles more fuel-efficient and handle just as well as their smaller counterparts. They began loading these larger cars with the latest hi-tech safety features and technology to make for a more comfortable ride.

As these larger cars became more efficient, demand for then rose. A whole new market for compact crossovers – a vehicle with the efficiency of smaller cars but the power and pizazz of a full-on crossover – was born.

By this time, the addition of fancy features on the inside and out had become an expectation, not an added bonus. The manufacturers complied with this expectation – and so came the rise of the luxury crossover.

Porsche makes its mark on the luxury crossover market

Porsche is perhaps a brand you associate only with luxury sports cars, but they have made as big a mark on the luxury crossover market as any manufacturer.

It started with the introduction of the Porsche Cayenne in 2003. Motorists loved the idea of combining the quality of the Porsche brand with the excitement and relative affordability of a crossover. The first generation sold well and the German manufacturer continues to shift plenty of Cayennes to this day.

In 2014, the Porsche Macan was introduced. This was a smaller entry-level crossover allowing a slightly less wealthy demographic to get their hands on a Porsche crossover. The Macan has plenty of power in its own right though. The 3.6-liter twin-turbo V-6, available on the higher-spec trims, makes sure of that.

If you want to book a test-drive of the Porsche Macan in Orland Park, Illinois, you can do so by contacting RIzza Porsche today.
