The Big Change that Could Be Coming to Porsche Boxsters

August 23rd, 2018 by

Currently, there’s already a lot to enjoy about your current Porsche Boxster if you have one, but one recent set of rumors suggests that it may be getting an engine upgrade soon, drawing from another Porsche favorite.

A New Engine?

The current rumor, which has yet to be confirmed or denied, is that the next Boxster Spyder is going to 911 GT3-sourced 4.0-liter engine, replacing the current top option in its range, the turbocharged 2.5-liter flat four. The apparent goal here is going to be to keep with the long-time idea of the Boxster being a true “driver’s car” by giving it a little more power.

Why Make The Change?

“Natural aspiration is one of our main USPs,” Andreas Preuninger, head of GT car development at Porsche, said in an interview with Autocar earlier this year. “At Motorsport, we think we can achieve throttle response and immediacy a little bit better with an atmospheric high-revving engine than any kind of turbo.” Other potential changes to the Spyder are going to include slimming down and changing its electric folding top to a “tent top.”
